The word kimono literally means “a thing to wear” (ki= to wear, mono= thing). Although Western clothes are now the norm in Japan, the art of kimono is still an enduring symbol of traditional Japanese culture.

Kimono are long T-shaped robes with wide sleeves, usually wrapped around the body securely with a sash (obi) around the waist. The wrap style allows for ease of movement, particularly in a culture where many activities are performed while seated on the floor. The kimono have been made to be well-suited to Japan's climate. Unlined kimono are worn in the humid summers, while in winter, warmth is provided by lined kimono worn in many layers.

Today, kimono are only worn for special occasions, such as tea ceremonies, weddings, formal events, and funerals. The appropriate kimono to wear for each event is selected according to the season and the wearer’s age and marital status.

ABOUT THE LOCATION

The experience will be held in a private temple that was established in the 1600s and is known for its status as an Imperial Covenant. Adorned with elegantly depicted wall and panel paintings, it's also famous for its serene garden that exhibits a calming moss garden as well as centuries old flowering trees that were visited and adored by one of Japan's past emperors. The temple is closed off from the general public except for two short time frames each year, however it is opened exclusively for guests of TOKI.

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

The experience will be led by a renowned family of kimono-makers, which have been manufacturing kimono and obi (kimono sash) since the 1780's. The family is particularly known for inheriting the traditional Nishijin method of weaving gold and silver foil into kimono textiles, yielding elegant, shimmery works of wearable art. Held inside the private temple, you will have a chance to try on the detailed and painstakingly hand-made kimono. Wearing a high-quality silk kimono surrounded by the gorgeous interior setting of the private temple is the perfect photo opportunity - traditional and classy with an elegant flair.
