Northern Japan: Hokuriku Region

KANAZAWA

For history and craft lovers, Kanazawa is an absolute must-see. Being one of the few major cities to not be bombed during World War II, the land is known for their well-preserved Edo-era districts, historical sites, art museums, and regional handicrafts. The area is brimming with culture and earned itself a spot in UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Crafts and Folk Art. Wander through historical entertainment districts to see the tea houses in which geisha perform at the Chaya districts, or visit the homes of samurai in Nagamachi. The food is also well known around the country, as its location is right between the boiling south and the freezing north, making its quality of seafood one of the best in the country.

SHIRAKAWA-GO

Powdered in snow or caressed by summer winds, the enchanting sight of Shirakawago minka style houses will captivate your heart. The architecture and technique is designed bearing the heavy loads of snow in the winter while still maintaining an elegant charm to its exterior, deeming it as one of Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

TOYAMA

Enjoy superb views of both mountain ranges and the sea that was deemed by the Most Beautiful Bays in the World club, making it the second bay in Japan to be given this honor. Hike through the Japan Alps to immerse yourself in nature. Toyama is brimming with not only beautiful scenery, but is also called “City of Glass Art” for its wondrous Toyama Glass Art Museum and several other museums. There are numerous observation decks around Toyama to give you stunning views of the city and nature, and if you have the time, enjoy a boat ride along one of their many canals. Be sure to try some of the seafood that you can only find here at Toyama.

KAGA

Kaga is one of Japan's hot spring towns and is located near the majestic Mount Hakusan, one of Japan's "three holy mountains." The area is most loved for their three major hot springs: Yamashiro, Yamanaka and Katayamazu, but also be sure to take the chance and admire Kaga's famous ceramics art, Kutani ware.
